Grinches are on the loose

Grinches are at it again, taking anything they can find from parked vehicles.

Tis the time of year where Grinches are active and seize any opportunity to take what they can find in parked vehicles. Several areas of Nanaimo are being hit particularly hard.

In the past two weeks several dozen vehicles in the Townsite, Stewart Ave and south Nanaimo have been broken in. In older model cars, the small vent window on the passenger side is being smashed and in others, windows are pulled back allowing the thieves to reach in and unlock the vehicle. In the majority of break ins, nothing of value is taken but anything in plain view is fair game. In one break in, the vehicle was left unlocked and the only item taken was a pack of raisins.

"Ensuring there are no items left in your vehicle is often enough to move thieves along to another vehicle. Even if it appears nothing was taken, the incident should be reported, as RCMP Forensic investigators may be able to locate evidence left at the scene. Also, reporting it allows our criminal analyst to track and monitor movements of persons involved, "said Constable Gary O'Brien.

If a person looks out of place in your neighbourhood and is acting suspicious, report it immediately to the non-emergency number of the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345. If a crime is being committed call 911.

Wishing you a safe and happy Christmas/Holiday season
