Nanaimo RCMP are investigating reports of several explosions originating from a dense undeveloped area in the vicinity of Rosstown Rd and Northfield Rd. On Tuesday May 28th at approximately 4:30 PM police responded to the area after an explosion was heard and found the remains of what appeared to be a home made explosive device.
Police spoke to a person in the area not associated to the explosion who said the explosion filled the air with thick white smoke and the ground actually trembled. RCMP and Police Dog Services searched the area and found the site of the explosion. Officers seized a small pipe, some aluminum foil and wrapping materials. A witness told police the explosions start near the beginning of May and there have been at least four explosions prior to the last one. The explosions have also occurred in the same general area and happen in either early morning or evening.
“Based on the description of this last explosion and what was found at the scene, there was potential for serious bodily harm to anyone who was nearby when the device exploded,”said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
